LOS ANGELES, Calif. (November 30, 2017) – Earlier this year, the HMSHost Foundation provided a $5,000 grant to the California Restaurant Association Foundation to advance youth workforce development programs. This is part of HMSHost Foundation’s larger effort to combat the cycle of poverty at the local level.

HMSHost is a global restaurateur with food and beverage operations in 120 airports and 99 travel plazas on motorways. ProStart® students were inspired to think about careers in travel dining when HMSHost volunteers spoke in their classrooms as part of FIT Day®, a statewide job-readiness training hosted by the CRA Foundation.

HMSHost leaders taught high school culinary arts students how to land a job in restaurants, advance in the foodservice industry, and be a leader. Students at Morse High School had a particularly relatable volunteer lead their training – a recent ProStart alum who is now an Assistant Food and Beverage Manager with HMSHost in San Diego.

Restaurants have a major role to play in economic development and ending the cycle of poverty. Nearly one in three people get their first jobs in restaurants. In fact, the restaurant industry is the largest employer of people aged 16-25. The CRA Foundation will use the $5,000 in grant funding to support enrichment activities that provide youth the skills, certifications and resources they need to land that all-important first job and advance in their careers.
